Interventional Cardiology

Interventional Cardiology is a part of cardiology that refers to catheter based therapy of structural cardiac diseasesAndreas Gruenzig is known as the father of interventional cardiology after the development of angioplasty by interventional radiologist Charles Dotter.

A large number of techniques can be used on the heart by catheterization. This usually involves the insertion of a sheath into the femoral artery. The radial artery may also be utilized for cannulation; this offers various advantages, which includes the accessibility of the artery in most of the patients, the convenient control of bleeding also in anticoagulated patients, the improvement of comfort as patients are capable of sitting up and walking immediately following the method, and the near absence of clinically significant squeal in patients with a normal Allen test.
